What Cowork is, and why it beats just chatting

Claude that works inside your real folders and finishes the task, instead of a chat window that only tells you how.

Cowork is Claude that does the work, not Claude that describes it.

You point it at a folder on your computer, tell it what you want, and it figures out the steps and carries them out: reading your files, editing them, making new ones, working through a multi-step task from start to finish. It runs on your desktop and only touches the folders you choose.

Why it beats just chatting

A chat window is a smart advisor. You ask how to clean up a messy folder of receipts, and it gives you a method to follow yourself. Cowork is the difference between advice and done. You hand it the folder of receipts and say "sort these into a spreadsheet by month and total each one," and it actually produces the spreadsheet.

That is the whole shift. Chat answers questions. Cowork completes tasks, on your real files, while you watch.

What it costs

Cowork is built into the Claude desktop app and is included on every paid plan:

  • Pro, about $20 a month, is enough to start. You get full Cowork with lower usage limits.
  • Max, about $100 or $200 a month, raises how much you can run before you hit limits. It is not a different feature set, just more headroom.

Pricing changes over time, so check claude.com for the current numbers. The free tier does not include Cowork, so a paid plan is the entry ticket.

Installing it

There is no terminal and no setup script. Cowork lives inside the Claude desktop app:

  1. Download the app from claude.com/download.
  2. Install it the way you would any app. It runs on macOS (Apple Silicon) and on Windows.
  3. Sign in with the account on your paid plan.

That is the whole install. Next, your first session.
